When I interviewed Michael Connelly on Tuesday as part of the Times Festival of Reading, he told me the title for the new spinoff of Bosch, but swore me to secrecy.

Now it can be told: The sequel to the hit seven-season Amazon series based on Connelly’s iconic Los Angeles Police Department Detective Harry Bosch will be titled Bosch: Legacy.

The title was revealed Sunday during the Vulture Festival in Los Angeles. It has a nice ring, and, as Connelly noted, focus-group research showed it has a high recognition factor.

The author, a part-time Tampa resident who has sold more than 80 million books worldwide, has been involved in Bosch: Legacy just as he was in Bosch, as an executive producer and writer. The first season of the spinoff, he said, has already wrapped and is in post-production.

Fans of Bosch know that the final episode of that series showed Harry turning in his badge and walking away from the LAPD.

Connelly said that Bosch: Legacy will jump ahead almost two years. It will focus on three characters from the original series: Bosch (Titus Welliver), now working as a private detective; Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers), who last time we saw her was a high-powered defense attorney who’d been the victim of a murder attempt; and Bosch’s daughter, Maddie (Madison Lintz), who is now an officer with the LAPD.

Some of the plot arc will carry over from the final season of Bosch, Connelly said, but his 2016 novel The Wrong Side of Goodbye will be the basis for much of the season.

Connelly’s newest novel, The Dark Hours, features Bosch and LAPD Detective Renee Ballard, who matches Bosch in fierce determination and integrity. Will Ballard show up in the spinoff? Connelly won’t say yes, won’t say no.

Bosch: Legacy will stream on IMDB TV, Amazon’s free streaming service. No drop date has been announced, but it’s expected to arrive in 2022.
