The federal holiday for New Year’s Day will be observed today, Jan. 2. That means some local services are unavailable and closed. However, some locations offering fun activities will remain open. Here’s a quick rundown on what you need to know.

Federal holiday

  • Government buildings, including city and county offices and state and federal courts are closed.
  • The post office is closed. There is no mail delivery today.
  • All public library locations in Hillsborough County are closed. In Pinellas, all libraries are closed except for the Seminole Community Library, which is open with normal hours.
  • Most bank locations are closed, as are the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.
  • Tampa trash collection will occur on the next scheduled pickup date. St. Petersburg and Clearwater’s Monday collection of trash and recycling will take place Tuesday, and Tuesday’s collection will take place Wednesday.
  • Public transportation will operate on normal schedules in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

  • International Plaza and Bay Street: 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • WestShore Plaza: 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Hyde Park Village: 10 a.m.-midnight
  • University Mall: 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Tyrone Square Mall: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Costco: 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m.
  • Walmart: 6 a.m.-11 p.m.
  • Target: 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Sam’s Club: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.

What is open

  • Winter Village: The park in downtown Tampa still has ice skating ($17, including skates), free street curling and a highly decorated wintry wonderland with a cafe offering holiday treats and a shopping village house in shipping containers. It is open 11 a.m.-11 p.m. today-Wednesday. Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, 600 N Ashley Drive, Tampa.
  • Snowcat Ridge: Take a trip down the Snowy Slopes and enjoy an indoor play area, ice skating and snowball play. 9 a.m.-10 p.m. daily through Sunday and then weekends through Feb. 26. Tickets start at $26.95 at 27839 St. Joe Road, Dade City. 813-576-1450.
  • Clearwater Marine Aquarium: There are extended hours from 2 to 7 p.m. through Saturday filled with family fun activities, live entertainment, festive food and special moments with the resident animals. Also check out Dino Rescue, a display of realistic-looking dinosaurs spread throughout the aquarium grounds that will remain on display through April 1.
