The first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI is pure Floridacore.
The 90-second video, first leaked Monday and then posted on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel, shows airboats and flamingos in flight. Babes dance on boats and stroll beaches and twerk on top of speeding cars. This tropical cityscape is built up with causeways and high-rises. All of it is soundtracked to sirens and Tom Petty.
A Business Wire release states that the new game will be set in ”the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond.” We know from the 2002 game “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City” that this municipality is a hyper-hedonistic version of Miami and Miami Beach. But what about the beyond part?
Some Tampa fans have taken to Reddit and Twitter to wonder if they, too, might recognize some local landmarks. Last year, a fan made map mockups inspired by Tampa, Orlando and Miami.
South Florida residents who view the trailer may draw similarities to the murals of Wynwood and the nightlife of Calle Ocho. There’s even a character who resembles one memorable Florida Man mugshot: the internet-famous Miami Joker, nicknamed for his face tattoos. But other shots would be at home in other parts of the states too, from strip clubs and rooftop hangs to shots of alligators lumbering into convenience stores and getting dragged out of swimming pools.
Here is what we do know about the game: It will feature GTA’s first female protagonist, plus what looks like a Bonnie and Clyde storyline. It will be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. And fans, now waiting a decade, finally have a 2025 release date.
