TAMPA — Sydney the puggle is the latest rare zoo animal to make its debut at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

Sydney is a baby echidna, an Australian mammal that is a relative of the platypus. These spiny anteaters are known as puggles when they are babies.

Sydney was about as big as a jelly bean when she hatched from her grape-sized egg, wrote Busch Gardens spokesperson Rebecca Romzek in an email. Now seven months old, the puggle has grown a full set of hollow spikes and weighs two pounds.

Sydney joins her mother, Adelaide, at the echidna habitat at Animal Collections.
