PLANT CITY — Two local pie pros went head to head on “Good Morning America” Monday morning as the show kicked off a weeklong search for the country’s best pies.

The ABC morning show launched its United States of Pie tour at Wish Farms in Plant City. The competition pitted Mike Martin and Luke Martin of Mike’s Pies against Christina Theofilos, who owns the Tampa Greek restaurant and bakery Psomi.

A trio of celebrity judges tasted the pies: WWE star Titus O’Neil, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow and local radio show host Joe Carballo. The panel of judges was tasked with choosing between Mike’s Pie’s Key lime pie and Theofilos’ spiced apple bougatsa pie.

Theofilos’ pie, made with two types of apples and a baklava streusel, got Carballo’s vote, but both O’Neil and Glasnow chose Mike’s Pie’s classic island-style Key lime pie, cementing a win for the local piemaking institution.

Next up, the show will head to Denver, Boston and Chicago. On Friday morning, the winners of all four competitions will face off to compete for the country’s best pie and a $10,000 prize.
