TAMPA — Two more Tampa restaurants on Thursday earned Bib Gourmand status from the Michelin Guide.

Gorkhali Kitchen, a Nepalese restaurant in Pebble Creek specializing in Himalayan-inspired cuisine, and Psomi, a Greek restaurant in North Hyde Park, were among eight restaurants announced Thursday morning in a news release from the celebrated food guide.

The other six eateries to receive the distinction, which applies to restaurants that “offer a meal of good quality at a good value,” were in Orlando and Miami.

Thursday’s announcement comes exactly one week before the full 2023 Michelin Guide Florida will be revealed.

Last year marked the debut of the coveted ratings guide in the state, with restaurants in Miami, Tampa and Orlando eligible to receive stars for the first time ever. In a major upset to Tampa’s culinary community, not a single restaurant snagged a star, while restaurants in Orlando and Miami collectively nabbed a total of 15. Rooster & The Till, Rocca and the since-shuttered Ichicoro Ramen all received the guide’s Bib Gourmand status.

Earlier this year, the guide announced three additional Tampa restaurants to be highlighted in the 2023 guide: Ponte, Lilac and Noble Rice. The addition is meant to showcase the restaurants as new selections but doesn’t necessarily mean the eateries will earn a star or a Bib Gourmand distinction.

“The restaurants joining the Bib Gourmand selection prove that foodies can find flavorful international feasts right in their own backyard — in Miami, Orlando or Tampa,” said Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of Michelin Guides. “Not only are these establishments unique for their tasty dishes and quality ingredients, but they’re also approachable in terms of price and atmosphere.”

Though the James Beard Awards are considered by many the Oscars of the culinary world, the Michelin Guide is arguably the most widely respected restaurant ratings system. Tampa Bay chefs and restaurants were once again absent in this year’s Beard selections, and the Michelin Guide’s foray into Florida has many local chefs hopeful for a star and more widespread recognition.

The full 2023 Florida guide will be announced at an invitation-only ceremony on May 11 at LoanDepot Park in Miami.
