Grammy winner Darius Rucker will headline the Tampa Pig Jig in Julian B. Lane Park on Oct. 23, organizers announced Monday.
It’s the biggest headliner yet for what has become one of the biggest philanthropic events in the area. The Pig Jig combines live music, games and a silent auction, along with a barbecue competition to raise money for NephCure Kidney International, which supports research seeking the cause of potentially debilitating kidney diseases.
Rucker will be joined by multi-platinum-selling artist Brett Young (In Case You Didn’t Know), along with alternative and folk artists Judah & the Lion and Wilderado. Additional local acts will be announced soon.
As the frontman for Hootie & the Blowfish, Rucker picked up his first Grammy. The band’s debut, Cracked Rear View, remains among the Top 10 bestselling studio albums of all time. In 2008, he switched to country and earned a whole new legion of fans with four No. 1 albums on the Billboard Country chart.
He won his third career Grammy Award for Best Solo Country Performance with his version of Old Crow Medicine Show’s Wagon Wheel, one of the top five best-selling country songs of all time.
The Tampa Pig Jig was started 10 years ago by a group of local men to support their friend in his fight against the rare kidney disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. It has raised more than $5 million, helping fund more than 26 trials happening worldwide.
“Each year, we’ve been able to grow our total funds raised for NephCure Kidney International, and in 2021 we are more committed than ever to help ‘cue up a cure for FSGS,” event founder Chris Whitney said in a statement. “Recent insights shared by our partners at NephCure indicate that the first approved FSGS drug could be on the horizon within the next few years.”
