CLEARWATER — Two Pinellas County women were hospitalized with potentially life-threatening injuries Saturday night after a nearly head-on collision on the Courtney Campbell Causeway.
The crash occurred at about 11:45 p.m., closing the upper Tampa Bay crossing which links Clearwater and Tampa for roughly 5 hours, according to Clearwater police.
Diana Sofia Sandoval, 36, of Clearwater, was driving westbound in a 2018 Nissan Sentra when she suddenly lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail on the north side of the road, according to police. Sandoval then over-corrected, sending the Sentra through the median break and into the eastbound lanes of the causeway.
Sandoval’s vehicle smashed into the front of a 2011 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Eduardo R. Reices, 39, of Largo, police said.
Reices escaped the crash uninjured, but his passenger, Olga Lugo Gonzalez, 27, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with serious injuries, police said.
Sandoval was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, where she is also being treated for potentially life-threatening injuries, police said.
Clearwater police are still actively investigating the cause and circumstances surrounding the crash.
