Tampa Bay Times apologizes for profane news alert sent by vendor

The news alert sent to Times app readers was sent by an employee working for the company that provides the platform for push notifications.

This afternoon, a news alert that included a profanity went out from our Tampa Bay Times account.

The alert was sent by an employee of a Times technology vendor who was testing a news alert system.

It was not written or sent by a Times employee, and it came without warning or consultation with us.

We have alerted the company and are in vigorous conversations with them to prevent any recurrence.

The company, Naviga, provides the platform that many news organizations use to send push notifications to their digital app users. We apologize deeply to our readers.
