Sunset Point Road closes after motorcyclist crash in Clearwater

Sunset Point Road in Clearwater was closed Saturday afternoon while officials investigated a car accident involving a motorcycle, according to Clearwater Police.

Clearwater Fire & Rescue and police officers responded to the crash, which happened at 4:14 p.m. Saturday. The motorcyclist, a 33-year-old Clearwater man, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg as a trauma alert where he later died, police said.

Witnesses at the scene said the motorcyclist was speeding before the crash and ran a red light at the intersection, police said.

Both westbound lanes of Sunset Point Road near World Parkway were closed through the afternoon.
