Highway Patrol: Driver flees fatal crash on I-275

A driver hit and killed a 19-year-old pedestrian on Interstate 275 early Sunday morning then fled the scene, the car's passengers told Florida Highway Patrol troopers.

The pedestrian, Justin Martinez-Sanchez of Land O'Lakes, was walking across the highway about 2:15 a.m. A 2011 Audi A4 was driving northbound on the interstate just south of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Martinez-Sanchez walked directly into the car's path, according to an FHP report, and died at the scene.

Then, according to Nathanael Huitt, 26, of Tampa and Austin Shulz, 27, of Tampa, the driver — a man they knew only as "Chris" — fled the scene, driving to a gas station on U.S. 92. He then got out of the car and left the scene on foot, while Huitt and Shulz called for law enforcement, they told the FHP. Both Huitt and Shulz were affected by alcohol, troopers reported.

They describe the driver as a 6-foot-tall man between 20 and 25 years old, wearing a black shirt and jeans. Troopers are still looking for the man, and charges are pending.

Parents seek video
of fatal shooting

The parents of a man who was fatally shot during a confrontation outside a drug store are suing the police department to obtain video of the shooting.

Attorneys for the parents of 20-year-old Andre Smith told local media outlets that they have a legal right to see the video. The lawsuit was filed last week against the Davie Police Department, which contends the video is exempt from disclosure during an ongoing investigation.

Police say Smith was at a CVS on Nov. 1 to sell an iPhone to 37-year-old Matthew Jay Barry. But after the sale in the parking lot, police say Smith tried to get the phone back and was shot by Barry.

Barry has a valid concealed carry permit. No charges have been filed.

Man killed in crash after cars hit cattle

Police say a motorist was killed in a crash that began after multiple vehicles hit cattle that had wandered onto the highway.

The Florida Highway Patrol identified the dead man as Lawrence Allegro, 61, of Enterprise. Troopers say he was driving Friday night on a highway west of Daytona Beach when his car was struck head-on by another vehicle who hit one of the cattle.

Allegro also struck one of the animals. A semitrailer truck then hit a third animal. The other two drivers weren't seriously injured. Allegro died at a hospital.

Troopers say all three of the cattle were killed.
