RIVERVIEW — A 58-year-old Sarasota woman was killed Wednesday when she lost control of an SUV on Interstate 75 and crashed into the tree line, troopers said.

Carolyn Lee Bruggeman was driving south on the interstate approaching Gibsonton Drive when she lost control of her 2005 Subaru SUV while braking for stopped traffic, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Due in part to wet road conditions, the Subaru left the roadway, entered the west shoulder and overturned a number of times, coming to rest in the treeline.

Bruggeman died at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt and investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, troopers said.

The sole passenger in the Subaru, 40-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Young, was treated for minor injuries at Tampa General Hospital.
