Two men walking along Polk road hit and killed by semi that crossed white line, deputies say

“The passenger-side tires of the truck crossed the white fog line and the truck hit both men," deputies said in a news release.

Two men walking along a Polk County roadway were killed Monday night after a semi crossed the white line and hit them, Polk sheriff’s official said.

The crash occurred about 8:20 p.m. on State Road 60 east of Coronet Road in Mulberry.

Deputies said Rafael Gandoy, 29, and Armando Melendez, 23, both of Lakeland, were hit by a 2016 International tractor with a box trailer that was driven by Francisco Botello-Hernandez, 54, also of Lakeland.

Deputies said the semi had been heading east on State Road 60 as both men also walked east “on the paved right of way,” a news release states. “The passenger-side tires of the truck crossed the white fog line and the truck hit both men.”

Gandoy was pronounced dead at the scene. Melendez was taken by helicopter to Lakeland Regional Health, where he died.

Bottello-Hernandez was not injured. Deputies say the crash remains under investigation.
