Tampa man faces murder charge in May slaying, deputies say

Deputies found the victim on May 25. The homicide may be connected to a nearby traffic crash.

TAMPA — A 27-year-old jail inmate now faces a charge of first-degree murder in a May 25 homicide that took place at an apartment complex, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Rakim Harris was already in the Hillsborough County jail when he was arrested Wednesday on the new charge. He has been held there since his July 2 arrest on a charge of resisting an officer without violence. Authorities later added two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and three counts of violating his probation.

The murder charge comes nearly two months after a 33-year-old man was fatally injured at the Del Rio Apartments following a traffic crash on N 50th Street near E Sligh Avenue. The Sheriff’s Office did not release the name of the man who was killed or any information about what led to his death.

Deputies arrived at the apartment complex at 9:30 p.m. on May 25 to investigate a 911 call reporting gunshots in the area. They found a man “suffering from upper body trauma,” the Sheriff’s Office said then. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The nearby traffic crash is likely connected to the homicide, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Three men who were riding in dark blue Nissan Sentra were seen on surveillance video running from the scene, jumping over a fence moments after deputies believe the homicide took place.

Harris was being held Thursday without bail in the Orient Road Jail.
