St. Petersburg police shot and killed a dog Friday morning after the animal seriously injured a woman and bit a responding officer.

At about 7:40 a.m. Friday, police were summoned to the 800 block of 93rd Avenue N, where a 67-year-old woman had suffered serious injuries when she was bitten by a dog multiple times. The dog also bit an officer who responded to the scene, the St. Petersburg Police Department said in a news release.

The dog charged officers, who shot it to “stop it from attacking again,” the agency reported. The dog died.

The woman was taken to the hospital. The officer who was bitten also went to the hospital.

An investigation was underway Friday morning, police said. No other details were released.
