TAMPA — One person died after a shooting at an apartment complex Sunday afternoon, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies received a 911 call at about 2:30 p.m. about a shooting at Coopers Pond Apartments at 3701 Fountain Mist Drive. When they arrived, deputies found a victim with gunshot wounds inside one of the apartments.

The person was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and died, the agency said.

Deputies did not release the name of the shooting victim, citing their interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a constitutional amendment passed by voters in 2018 that is designed to protect crime victims, but that also deprives the public of information that had long been made available in Florida.

The suspect fled from the scene and the Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate. “It is believed that the suspect and victim knew each other, and there is no threat to the public at this time," said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at (813) 247-8200. To remain anonymous and be eligible for a $5,000 reward, call Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at (800) 873–8477, send anonymous tips, video or photos to or send a mobile tip using the P3 Tips app.
