Motorcyclist from Wauchula killed in crash on I-275 in Tampa

The 32-year-old motorcyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet when he was struck by a sedan merging into his lane.

TAMPA — A motorcyclist from Wauchula was killed early Sunday in a crash on southbound Interstate 275, just north of Memorial Highway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said the 32-year-old motorcyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet as he traveled south down the center lane of the interstate just after midnight on Sunday. Traveling next to him, in the inside lane, was a car driven by a 23-year-old St. Petersburg man, the Highway Patrol said.

Around 12:25 a.m., the car’s driver struck the motorcyclist as he attempted to merge into the center lane. The impact from the crash sent both vehicles onto the shoulder and they collided with the guardrail.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. The driver of the car was not injured.

The Highway Patrol did not release their names under its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records laws.
