TAMPA — A 51-year-old Tampa woman died Sunday afternoon when a speeding, erratic driver lost control on West Hillsborough Avenue and struck her sport utility vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred about 2:45 p.m. Sunday on Hillsborough Avenue near Countryway Boulevard.

A 59-year-old Tampa man was headed east on Hillsborough in an SUV, speeding and changing lanes erratically, when he lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, the Highway Patrol said. The vehicle crossed the median into the westbound lanes, where it collided with the other SUV.

The woman died at the scene. The man received serious injuries.

The Highway Patrol did not release the names of the drivers because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that’s meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information that had long been available under Florida’s public records laws.
