Bicyclist killed while pedaling in wrong direction, St. Petersburg police say

ST. PETERSBURG — A St. Petersburg man was killed Sunday after he was struck by a sport utility vehicle while pedaling the wrong way on a one-way street, St. Petersburg Police said.

Chad R. Bennett, 37, was taken to Bayfront Health, where he was pronounced dead.

The collision occurred around 1:40 a.m. as a St. Petersburg man driving a 2014 Toyota Rav4 turned west onto First Avenue North from Second Street North, police said. First Avenue North is a one-way street. The driver had the green light.

Bennett was pedaling in the south curb lane of the road, going the wrong way when the collision occurred, the Highway Patrol said. Bennett had no lights on his bicycle.
