Motorcyclist killed when SUV pulls in front of him on Roosevelt, St. Pete police say

The rider was headed west when he drove into a vehicle that was merging onto the road from I-275, police said.

ST. PETERSBURG — A man riding a motorcycle was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle Tuesday on Roosevelt Boulevard near Interstate 275, St. Petersburg police said.

The collision occurred about 6:10 a.m. Westbound lanes of Roosevelt and the southbound I-275 exit were closed for the investigation.

The motorcycle rider, Edwin V. Colon, was headed west along Roosevelt on a 2012 Suzuki when a Toyota Rav4 merging onto Roosevelt from southbound I-275 pulled into his path, police said. Colon was unable to avoid the SUV, driven by Juan Valenci, and struck the driver’s side.

Colon was killed in the collision. He was wearing a helmet. Another vehicle struck the motorcycle after the crash.

There was a third collision at the scene as motorists tried to navigate around the wreckage. One vehicle rear-ended another, causing minor damage.

The investigations into each of the crashes are continuing.
