A 15-year-old Tampa boy was arrested Wednesday after Tampa police said he brought an unloaded handgun to Tampa’s Chamberlain High School.
According to the Tampa Police Department, investigators told a school resource officer on Wednesday that the boy had an active warrant for his arrest on a grand theft auto charge in Hillsborough County. The boy, who is not being named by the Tampa Bay Times because of his age, arrived late to school that morning and was taken to Chamberlain’s administrative office where he was searched, police said.
During the search, it was discovered that the boy was carrying an unloaded handgun into the school, located at 9401 N. Boulevard.
The boy was taken into custody on both his outstanding warrant and an additional charge for being a minor in possession of a firearm. By Wednesday evening he remained in the county’s Juvenile Assessment Center.
According to Tampa Police, no threats were ever made to any individuals, and the boy did not threaten Chamberlain High School.
