CLEARWATER — A man died Saturday after his Toyota Camry plunged into a pond off State Road 580, according to police.

The crash was reported about 8 a.m. First-responders were sent to the pond off S.R. 580 slightly east of McMullen Booth Road.

Clearwater police say 22-year-old Luis Angel Alvarado Correa of Wimauma died in the crash.

Correa was traveling west on S.R. 580 when he lost control of his car, struck a curb and veered into the pond. Police say it eventually came to a rest upside down in eight feet of water.

All lanes of S.R. 580 were closed while rescuers pulled Correa’s body out of the car, police said.

The road was completely reopened by 3 p.m. Police did not release any other information about the incident, including what led the driver to lose control.
