The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a scam in which people are posing as deputies to get personal information from residents.

The callers ask for identifying information and hang up when questioned further, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Those who have attempted to call the scammers back have been redirected to the Sheriff’s Office’s communications center.

Police say people should avoid providing personal details by phone and question anyone who asks for such information. To report an instance of this scam or a similar one, call 727-582-6200 to contact the department’s Economic Crimes Unit.
