A 50-year-old woman was critically injured in a car accident early Saturday morning that closed southbound lanes of I-75 in Hernando County near the 298.5 mile marker, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

At about 4:15 a.m., a 33-year-old Fruitland Park man was driving a car south at a high speed on I-75 when his car collided with the rear of a pickup truck also traveling south on that road. Both vehicles spun toward the center median, struck the guardrail and rotated back across the lanes to the west shoulder of the road. The pickup truck overturned and its female passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected. The pickup truck’s driver, a 63-year-old man, suffered minor injuries, as did the driver of the car.

The man and woman in the pickup are from Jennings, which is in Hamilton County.

Charges are pending in the accident as the highway patrol continues to investigate. The road reopened about 8:15 a.m., according to the news release.
