Motorcyclist dies in St. Petersburg crash on 34th Street S

ST. PETERSBURG — A 28-year-old motorcyclist died in a Monday crash, according to police.

The crash took place about 4:35 p.m. at the intersection of 34th Street S and 18th Avenue S.

A Toyota Camry driven by 80-year-old Lewis Lemuel Mitten, Jr., of Pinellas Park, was traveling northbound on 34th Street S and turned west onto 18th Avenue S, according to St. Petersburg police.

The car turned into the path of a motorcycle headed south on 34th Street S, police said. The motorcycle struck the Camry, police said, then struck another car and caught fire.

Motorcyclist Gregg Anthony Johnson Jr., of St. Petersburg, was thrown from the motorcycle. He was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries. Police did not say if he was wearing a helmet at the time.

Mitten was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
