TAMPA — A 43-year-old Lutz man was killed Wednesday afternoon after a medical emergency caused him to crash his car on the Selmon Expressway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened at 3:30 p.m. near the expressway’s exit for 50th Street in East Tampa, troopers said.
A passenger in the car — identified only as a female from Tampa — was critically injured in the crash, troopers said. No other vehicles were involved.
The car was traveling eastbound on the expressway before it struck a barrier wall and came to a rest, troopers said.
The Highway Patrol did not name either person involved in the crash. It is unknown whether either were wearing seatbelts at the time of impact with the barrier wall.
