A 17-year-old boy shot and killed his cousin Monday in St. Petersburg.

According to St. Petersburg police, Ronald Gary, 40, was hospitalized with critical injuries early Monday and later died. Officers arrested his cousin and roommate, Keyshawn Smiley, on a charge of first-degree murder.

Gary and Smiley lived together at 4114 Fairfield Ave. S, just south of Fairmount Park Elementary School, according to police. They got in an argument, and Smiley shot his cousin “multiple times,” the agency said in a news release. Officers responded about 7:15 a.m. to the home.

Gary’s death marks St. Petersburg’s 15th homicide so far this year — the same number, in just 3 1/2 months, that the city saw in all of 2020. All but one are shootings.

Before Gary, the latest victim was Tedarrell Davenport, 30, who was shot and killed Saturday near Gibbs High School. Police said the shooting was a homicide but have not arrested anyone.
