ZEPHYRHILLS — Two drivers died today after a sport-utility vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided nearly head-on with another car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred about 6:50 a.m. on Eiland Boulevard east of Skipper Lane, where Eiland has one lane in each direction and a turn lane in the middle.

The SUV was headed west on Eiland Boulevard when for unknown reasons the 19-year-old Zephyrhills man at the wheel crossed into the eastbound lane, troopers said. He collided with a westbound car driven by a 65-year-old Williamstown, N.Y., woman.

The SUV spun and overturned while the car struck a mailbox on the south shoulder of Eiland.

The woman was killed at the scene. The other driver died later at a hospital. Both were wearing seatbelts.
