St. Petersburg man killed while crossing street in heavy rain, police say

ST. PETERSBURG — A 54-year-old St. Petersburg man died Wednesday after he was hit by a car while crossing 18th Avenue South in a heavy rainstorm, police said.

Jeffrey Francis Maurio was crossing the street from north to south near 19th Street South at about 10:20 p.m. when he was hit by a Volkswagen Passat, St. Petersburg police said. The driver, who was not identified, remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

Maurio was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.
