A 16-year-old boy is in the hospital with serious injuries Thursday after being hit by a CSX freight train at McMullen Booth Road near State Road 590 in Pinellas County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At 4:12 p.m. Thursday the teen was walking on railroad tracks just west of McMullen Booth Road, adjacent to the intersection at State Road 590. Troopers said the boy did not see the westbound train approaching and was struck.

He was airlifted to an area hospital, Sgt. Steve Gaskins of the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release Thursday night.

Highway Patrol did not release the name of those involved in the crash because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law.

This is a developing story. Stay with for updates.
