A 28-year-old man from Riverview is dead and another man is “severely injured” after motorcycles collided in Tarpon Springs late Wednesday night, according to the Tarpon Springs Police Department.
Carlos Candelario was driving a motorcycle southbound on U.S. 19, headed to Tampa with a large group of motorcyclists, when he swerved into another bike around 11:15 p.m., according to information given to investigators. It is unknown why Candelario swerved, they said.
Candelario, of Riverview, was ejected from his motorcycle and died at the scene, police said in a news release Thursday. He was wearing a helmet, but investigators say it may not have been properly secured because it appears to have come off in the crash.
Another motorcyclist suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was treated at the scene by Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue personnel and then transported by ambulance to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, police said.
At this point in the investigation, it does not appear that speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, according to the Police Department.
It appears that a third motorcycle may have been involved in the crash and gone down, too, but that driver left the scene before officers arrived, investigators said.
The investigation is ongoing.
