Fiery crash on Veterans Expressway kills 1, backs up traffic
Lane closures snarled traffic for 5 hours. One motorist reported rush-hour delays extended to Interstate 275.

One person is dead after a crash on Veterans Expressway in Hillsborough County on Friday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The northbound lanes of the expressway, also known as State Road 589, were closed at Hillsborough Avenue until 6:25 p.m., troopers said. The closures caused major traffic backups during the rush hour commute, and one motorist told the Tampa Bay Times that delayed extended to Interstate 275.
The crash happened when the driver of a pickup truck traveling northbound lost control, crossing from the outside lane to the shoulder before colliding with a concrete barrier wall around 1:20 p.m., the Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The impact sent the truck back into lanes of traffic, and the pickup struck the right-side drive axles of a tractor-trailer being driven by a 52-year-old man from Brandon, troopers said.

The semitrailer began to jackknife, and both vehicles hit a barrier wall where it ended and a metal guardrail began, according to the Highway Patrol. Both vehicles then caught fire.

The pickup driver, whose identity is not known yet, died at the scene of the crash, troopers said. The semitrailer driver was not injured.
