A 61-year-old man is in critical condition after the mirror of a passing U-Haul box truck hit him in the head Friday afternoon in St. Petersburg, police said.

Richard Edward Robinson was walking eastbound in the east driveway of the CVS located at 3426 Central Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. It was raining, and as he kept walking toward 34th Street South, the passenger-side mirror of a 2015 GMC U-Haul box truck driving southbound on 34th Street South struck him in the head, the St. Petersburg Police Department said in a news release.

The impact caused Robinson to fall to the ground, police said.

He was taken to Bayfront Health St. Pete in critical condition, the Police Department said. The U-Haul driver and a passenger were not injured.

There was traffic in front of the truck and to the side of it, and all of the vehicles were traveling below the speed limit, according to police. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, the release said.

This is a developing story. Stay with for updates.
