POLK CITY — A motorcyclist died Monday evening after a collision with a state trooper’s patrol car sent him into the path of semi-trailer truck, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on Interstate-4 just west of State Road 559, troopers said.

A roadway construction crew was making repairs to the highway at the time of the crash. The trooper, a 30-year-old Tampa man, drove into the path of a 2015 Harley Davidson while he was helping the construction crew.

The motorcyclist, identified as a Lakeland man, 52, struck the front-right side of the 2017 Dodge patrol car. The impact sent him into the next lane of traffic, where he was struck by the semi-trailer.

The Lakeland man died at the scene of the crash. The trooper and the truck driver, a 25-year-old South Carolina man, were not injured.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. A traffic homicide investigation is underway.

The Highway Patrol did not release the names of those involved in the crash.
