A man in a wheelchair was hit and killed by a vehicle in St. Petersburg Sunday night, St. Petersburg police said.
The victim was identified as Marcelo Benedicto, 79, a Navy veteran who lived a few blocks away from the crash.
The crash occurred at 7:15 p.m. in the 2100 block of 5th Avenue N.
Benedicto died at the scene, and the vehicle fled, police said.
5th Avenue was closed in all directions from the Interstate 275 ramp to 24th Street while police investigated. Police anticipated the road would be closed for several hours.
No other information was released.
