Man arrested in fatal Tampa hit and run crash

TAMPA — A man has been arrested in connection to a fatal hit and run crash on Hillsborough Avenue over the weekend.

Troopers on Tuesday arrested 25-year-old Apopka resident Christopher Xavier Cardenas Alvelo on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. Sunday. The victim, identified only as a Hispanic man, was killed while crossing or walking along Hillsborough Avenue near the intersection with Benjamin Road, troopers said.

Investigators used pieces of the car recovered at the scene to identify the type of vehicle involved. Troopers said the car that struck the man, a white 2016 Hyundai Sonata owned by Cardenas Alvelo, was found abandoned in the parking lot of the McDonald’s at 4333 W Hillsborough Ave.

Cardenas Alvelo showed up at the McDonald’s on Tuesday to pick up the car while troopers were there and provided information that led to his arrest, said Sgt. Steve Gaskins, a spokesperson for the Highway Patrol. He was booked into the Hillsborough County jail and was being held Tuesday evening on $15,000 bail.
