1 dead in crash after pickup tries U-turn on 34th Street N in St. Petersburg

One person is dead after two vehicles collided in St. Petersburg on Tuesday evening.

The crash occurred around 6:42 p.m. at 34th Street N and 13th Avenue N, the St. Petersburg Police Department said. Vito Mckie, 52, was driving a 1980 Pontiac sports car south on 34th Street N as a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was headed north on 34th Street N.

The pickup made a U-turn as Mckie was going through the light and the vehicles collided.

Mckie was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The pickup truck driver, a woman in her 60s, received minor injuries, police said.

Southbound 34th Street N was closed at 13th Avenue N while authorities investigated the crash, the release said.

Due to incorrect information provided to the Times, earlier versions of this story said the crash happened at 34th Street N and 13th Street N. However, it took place at 34th Street N and 13th Avenue N. This story has been updated.
