Clearwater sanitation worker seriously injured in Tuesday crash

The sanitation worker was directing a trash truck that was being backed onto a street when he was hit by a car, police said.

A city of Clearwater sanitation worker was seriously injured Tuesday morning after he was struck by a car, police said.

Clearwater Fire & Rescue and the Clearwater Police Department responded to the crash at 7:30 a.m. on North Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue at Eldridge Street. Police said the sanitation worker was helping a trash truck back out onto the street when the car hit him.

The man was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with serious injuries, but he was in stable condition, Clearwater police said later on Tuesday morning.

North Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue was closed in both directions while police investigated Tuesday morning. Around noon, police said the road had reopened.

No other information was released.
