A plume of smoke blanketed the area around Amalie Arena on Friday morning. The culprit — an old piece of equipment caught fire, according to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tampa Fire Rescue responded to a call for a small trash fire outside the arena, at 401 Channelside Drive, at 9:24 a.m., according to Vivian McIlrath, a spokesperson for the agency.

A spokesperson for the Tampa Bay Lightning said an old piece of equipment in the compound lot was being disassembled and a spark ignited the fire.

The fire was extinguished in a minute, McIlrath said. There were no reported injuries.

“The first engine arrived on scene, extinguished the fire, canceled everybody,” McIlrath said. “It did not affect business as usual.”

While the fire was small, it resulted in a large cloud of smoke over the waterfront area.
