Teen girl hit by trolley in St. Petersburg has life-threatening injuries

A pedestrian was hit Sunday morning by the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority trolley on First Avenue South near Seventh Street in St. Petersburg, according to police.

The pedestrian, a 15-year-old Gulfport girl, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, St. Petersburg police said in a news release. Two passengers on the trolley also went to the hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

The crash happened around 11:22 a.m. In a second news release Sunday night, police said the girl had just exited a SunRunner bus and was trying to cross First Avenue when she was struck by the eastbound trolley.

The trolley driver, 54-year-old Chrishawn Rodgers of Tampa, was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

A police spokesperson on Monday identified the girl as Tammy Burch and said she remained in critical but stable condition.

First Avenue South between Martin Luther King Jr. Street and Fifth Street was closed for several hours Sunday afternoon while the investigation continued.
