Two people are dead following a multi-car crash on U.S. 19 that closed down northbound lanes in Pinellas County for several hours Saturday night.
According to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 10:30 p.m., south of Republic Drive on U.S. 19.
A Chevy Trax driving north on U.S. 19, in the inside center lane, failed to stop for four cars, all of which were stopped in traffic, according to the release. The driver of the Chevy Trax, a 50-year-old Largo man, struck the back of a Hyundai Santa Fe, propelling the vehicle forward into the three other vehicles — a Jeep Cherokee, Kia Stinger and Mercedes GLE.
Both the driver of the Chevy Trax and a 54-year-old woman from Clearwater, who was a passenger in the Hyundai Santa Fe, were taken to local hospitals where they were pronounced dead. Neither person was identified by the Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Santa Fe, a 62-year-old man from Clearwater, suffered minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
