APOLLO BEACH — A science teacher at Ferrell Girls Preparatory Academy was arrested Wednesday on allegations that he engaged in an inapropriate relationship with a 14-year-old student, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Jason McClain Osborne, 40, faces felony charges of lewd and lascivious conduct with touching and unlawful use of a two-way communications device, according to jail records.
He is a seventh- and eighth-grade science teacher, according to the school website. The identity of the 14-year-old was withheld by the Sheriff's Office because of the nature of the allegations.
Osborne taught the student last school year, according to the arrest report, and though he no longer taught the 14-year-old this school year he still maintained regular contact.
Then on Oct. 1, deputies said Osborne sent his first message to the 14-year-old using the Remind app. The teacher continued to cultivate a relationship with the student, the report said, and he twice traveled to her neighborhood to visit her. He also sought to have the student attend a March 2019 concert with him.
Osborne engaged in inapropriate physical contact with the 14-year-old but did not engage in sexual contact, the report said.
The teacher was arrested Wednesday at a Starbucks on Big Bend Road. He was being held in the Hillsborough County jail in lieu of $17,000 bail.
Ferrell is the Hillsborough County School District's single-gendered magnet middle school. The school district said he was hired in 2015 and will not return to the school during the sheriff's investigation.
