Hillsborough Deputies rescue 82-year-old Webster woman from sinking vehicle

PLANT CITY — An 82-year-old Webster woman was rescued from her sinking vehicle by two Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies Saturday afternoon after it crashed into a pond.

According the Florida Highway Patrol, Leona Evans was driving west on the Paul Buchman Highway, east of Alexander Street, when the accident occurred.

At the intersection, Evans drove across all lanes of Alexander Street and collided with a utility pole. Her 2015 Hyundai became airborne, crossed an embankment and struck a chain link fence before ending up in the pond.

The deputies arrived shortly after and rescued Evans from the sinking vehicle. She was taken to Lakeland Regional Health with serious injuries.
