SPRING HILL

Poker run benefits Humane Society

The seventh annual Cruising For Critters Poker Run to benefit the Humane Society of the Nature Coast will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hernando Animal Hospital, 5335 Applegate Drive.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Riders will make their way through Hernando and Citrus counties trying to compile the best poker hand, picking up a card at each stop. The ride ends at R Beach Restaurant, 4054 Shoal Line Blvd., Hernando Beach, where there will be a party with music provided by George Marshall, food, drinks, prizes and Cruising for Critters merchandise. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of sales to the humane society.

Scorecards are $10 each or three for $25 if purchased in advance, or $12 each, three for $30 on the day of the event. To pre-purchase scorecards, visit cruisingforcritters.com or pick them up at the shelter, 7200 Mobley Road, Brooksville.

School celebrates teacher's retirement

Co-workers, parents and students — past and present — are invited to an open house to celebrate and honor Margie Yurtinus as she prepares to retire after 35 years of teaching. The event will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Challenger K-8 School of Science and Mathematics, 13400 Elgin Blvd.

Operation Backpack seeks contributors

Sponsors, volunteers and donations are needed for the second annual Spring Hill Operation Backpack, which will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Towne Square Mall, 3021 Commercial Way.

The event is free and open to all children attending Hernando County schools. There are no administrative costs — 100 percent of every donation will purchase school supplies for children. Club seeks volunteers for 'secret garden'

Members of the Brooksville Garden Club welcome volunteers to help work in the Living Memories Garden, which the club maintains, at 4 p.m. Thursday. The garden is behind the Hernando Heritage Museum, 601 Museum Court.

Members and volunteers will be weeding, planting and doing other cleaning chores in the "best kept secret garden" in Hernando. For information, call Carol at (352) 848-0505 or Ronette at (352) 544-5669.

Countywide

Bureau accepting grant applications

The Hernando County Tourism Bureau is accepting applications for grant funding for local events planned from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2016. For consideration, completed applications must be submitted by June 17. Oral presentations to the Tourism Development Council will be during the June 24 meeting at Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport.

Applicants may learn how to complete the grant application by attending a free training session from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the conference room at the airport, 15800 Flight Path Drive. south of Brooksville. The session will cover form completion, the oral presentation to the council and other requirements.
