Field trip will be topic of AARP meeting

Hernando County West AARP Chapter 5445 will meet Sept. 21 at Medicine Wheel Deli Cafe, 1254 S Broad St. The meeting starts at noon, but those ordering from the menu should arrive early. Volunteers sought for Planning Commission

Hernando County commissioners are accepting applications from individuals interested in being members of the Hernando County Planning and Zoning Commission. The commission acts as an advisory body to the County Commission on matters pertaining to rezoning and other land-use issues. All applicants must be residents and registered voters in Hernando County. Applicants must have computer access and a basic understanding of how to use a computer because all agenda packets and correspondence of the commission are prepared and distributed digitally. All members are required to provide their own laptops for meetings. This is a voluntary, non-paid position. Native plants will be sold during September

The Master Gardener Native Plant Sale will be from 9 a.m. to noon every Wednesday and Saturday during September, rain or shine, at the Master Gardener Nursery, 19490 Oliver St., behind the Hernando County Fairgrounds. Hernando County clerk's office relocates

The Hernando County Clerk of Circuit Court's customer service office at the Westside Government Center has moved from 7415 Forest Oaks Blvd. to 7405 Forest Oaks Blvd. The new location was formerly occupied by the Hernando County Utilities Department, which is now at 15365 Cortez Blvd. For information, call (352) 754-4201 or visit hernandoclerk.com.

Sheriff's Office offers course to teen drivers

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office will offer its next Teen Driver Challenge on Sept. 15 and 16. The classroom instruction will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Sheriff's Office at 18900 Cortez Blvd. Range instruction will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 at Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport off Broad Street, south of Brooksville. The program is designed to provide drivers ages 16 to 18 with knowledge and an understanding of vehicle dynamics and human kinetics. The program is free. Participants must have a driver's license. Tickets on sale for 'Annie' at Live Oak

Live Oak Theatre has announced that tickets are on sale for its season opener, Annie, the full original Broadway production, to be presented Oct. 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 at Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 200 Mount Fair Ave. Friday performances are at 7:30 p.m., Saturday performances are at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinees are at 2:30 p.m. Single admissions are $20 for adults and $5 for students ages 13 and younger with the purchase of an adult ticket. The Kiwanis Club of Spring Hill will host its first poker run Sept. 23 at the Cove restaurant, 3192 Shoal Line Blvd. Registration will be at 9:30 a.m., with kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. The event benefits Project Pleasant Dreams and the children of Hernando County. The ride begins and ends at the restaurant. All hands must be in by 4 p.m. The event includes music, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. The cost for $15 per rider; $5 for passengers. Applications sought for emergency money

Hernando County has been awarded $19,553 by the federal government to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The amount is based on the average number of unemployed individuals in the area, the total number of individuals below the poverty line and a jurisdiction's total population. A local board made up of representatives from the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, local government, ministries, the Jewish community and the United Way of Hernando County will determine how the funds are to be granted to Hernando organizations. Agencies interested in applying for unds must meet certain criteria. Applications are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the United Way of Hernando County, 4028 Commercial Way. Garden club to hold fall plant sale

The Spring Hill Garden Club will have its fall plant sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 6 and 7 at the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens, 1489 Parker Ave. A variety of plants will be sold at budget-friendly prices. Volunteers will answer questions, give expert advice and help visitors decide what is appropriate for their yard. Cash and checks will be accepted.

Boys & Girls Club to host kids event

The Boys & Girls Club of Hernando County will host its Day for Kids from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 16 at the Westside Unit, 5404 Applegate Drive. The event highlights the critical needs of kids and teens in the community. Adults are encouraged to participate in the event. There will be team sports, field games and free hot dogs. Mobile audiology services to launch

Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida will have a ribbon-cutting event along with a presentation of its new mobile audiology services van from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at Care A Lot Preschool, 10495 County Line Road. Local politicians will attend and cut the ribbon, joined by Sertoma members and local children. The public is invited. The van will provide pediatric hearing screenings and evaluations along with fitting and dispensing hearing aids. The foundation's focus is rural and under-served communities. WEEKI WACHEE

Marker for Centralia to be dedicated

The Historic Hernando Preservation Society will dedicate a state historical marker at 10 a.m. Sept. 23 near Centralia Road and Commercial Way, north of Weeki Wachee, in recognition of the town of Centralia. Centralia was a large logging and mill town that existed in Hernando County more than 100 years ago. Although now a ghost town, the short-lived community had an impact on Hernando County's history. Inaugural mermaid race will be Sept. 23

Participants in the inaugural Weeki Wachee Springs Mermaid Race, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 23, may choose to run or walk in the open-road course, which starts and ends at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, 6131 Commercial Way. Every finisher will receive a mermaid medal. Admission to the park is included with the registration fee. Each distance will have a unique finisher's medal. Those who purchase the Big Splash package and participate in all three distances will earn a bonus medal. Race start times stagger throughout the day. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. Advance registration fees are $150 (all three distances), $95 (half marathon), $40 (5K) and $30 (1-mile dash).
