Hernando County briefs for Oct. 10

Become a hospice volunteer: HPH Hospice is recruiting volunteers to help with patient support and to assist the cook in the kitchen at the Sturgill Hospice Care Center.

Prospective volunteers are invited to participate in a two-part orientation from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the care center, 12242 Cortez Blvd., Spring Hill. Attendance is mandatory both days; lunch will be provided. There is no cost, but registration is required due to limited seating. Call Jacque Lambert at (352) 597-1882.

Youth, family summit: The Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce's Education Committee and Hernando Youth Initiative will present the annual Summit for Youth and Families on Oct. 17 at Northcliffe Baptist Church, 10515 Northcliffe Blvd., Spring Hill.

Registration and refreshments begin at 8 a.m. Summit workshops will address the high school graduation rate, transition/workforce development, transition to post-secondary education, teen pregnancy, substance use/abuse, violence, child well-being, childhood obesity, health and mental health, mentoring, early learning and parent involvement.

Ethnic fest: St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church will present the annual Ethnic Festival from Oct. 23-26 on the church grounds, 13485 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill.

The four-day fest will feature a variety of ethnic foods, continuous entertainment, midway rides and games for children of all ages. Unlimited ride armbands are $25 per day in advance, $30 at the fest; unlimited four-day armbands are $70 in advance, $85 at the fest. For further information, call (352) 688-0663.

Gala for Hernando's heroes: Habitat for Humanity of Hernando County will host the third annual Building Hope in Hernando Heroes Gala on Oct. 18 at Southern Hills Plantation Club, 4200 Summit View Drive, Brooksville.

The evening will begin with a cocktail hour from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by a gourmet dinner and silent auction. The keynote speaker will be John Mitten, community volunteer and owner of the local Chick-fil-A restaurant. The 2014 Hero of the Year will be presented by state Sen. Wilton Simpson.

Stage West season tickets available: Season tickets are available for the 2014-15 season at Stage West Community Playhouse, 8390 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill.

Main Stage season tickets (four musicals) are $65, Forum Stage tickets (four plays) are $50, and season tickets for all eight shows on the Main and Forum stages are $100.

Shows on the Main Stage include: Hairspray, Thursday to Oct. 26; Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical, Dec. 4 to 14; The Sound of Music, Feb. 12 to 23, and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, April 9 to 19.

Shows on the Forum Stage include: Greater Tuna, Nov. 13 to 23; To Kill a Mockingbird, Jan. 15 to 25; Moonlight and Magnolias, March 12 to 22, and Born Yesterday, May 7 to 17.

All shows open with a Thursday evening performance at 7:30 p.m. and continue with shows at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays. Individual show tickets for plays on the Forum Stage are $15 each, $12 for students. Individual tickets for musicals on the Main Stage are $18 each, $15 for students.

Shrine guild hosts fashion show: The Yasmine Shrine Guild will host its annual fashion show Nov. 1 at the Hernando County Shrine Club, 13400 Montour St., west of Brooksville. Doors open for a social hour at 11 a.m.; lunch will be served at noon.

A complimentary glass of wine will be included with the luncheon. Fashions will be provided by Boutique on Wheels and will be available for purchase. There will be door prizes and a raffle.
