The Florida Department of Transportation will host an open house regarding the widening of State Road 50 from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the DOT's Brooksville Operations Center, 16411 Spring Hill Drive, south of Brooksville. There will be no formal presentation. Information and display boards will be available, outlining plans for construction between Commercial Way and Wiscon Road, including roadway widening, repaving, median cuts, sidewalk construction, multi-use path construction, signal replacement and highway lighting. Preliminary work on the $39 million project began in mid October and will run through summer 2015. Those unable to attend who would like information about the project may send email to

Donate blood, receive a 'Twilight' T-shirt

A Twilight Blood Drive with the LifeSouth bloodmobile will be from 4 to 10 p.m. today and Thursday in front of Walmart, 13300 Cortez Blvd. Those who donate blood will receive a special edition Twilight T-shirt while supplies last. Donors must be at least 17 (16-year-olds can donate with written parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and show valid photo identification.
