Funds available from United Way of Pasco

The United Way of Pasco County has opened a competitive application process for $250,000 it has available in grant funding. The funding comes from Pasco County government. Traditionally, this funding has supported programs that help residents with food, shelter, safety, financial stability, education and health care. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Nov. 30. Organizations that are awarded funding will be notified in early January, and allocation payments will be made monthly through December 2017. To apply, visit unitedwaypasco.org and click on the "Funding Opportunities" link. To be eligible for funding, organizations must meet the following requirements: • Recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity since Nov. 30, 2015. • Programming that has been in operation for more than one year prior to the application deadline. • Provides health and human services within the geographic boundaries of Pasco County. • Requested funds are not for services delivered by Pasco County government.

Volunteers to answer Medicare questions

SHINE volunteers will be at various locations in Pasco County to answer Medicare questions. SHINE is a Florida Department of Elder Affairs program though which volunteers provide free, unbiased, one-on-one insurance counseling and information about Medicare options and prescription drug assistance for elders and their families and caregivers. Volunteers will be at the following times: • 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at Hugh Embry Library, 14215 4th St., Dade City. • 11 a.m. Nov. 17, New River Library, 34043 State Road 54, Wesley Chapel. • 11 a.m. Nov. 19, Land O'Lakes Library, 2818 Collier Parkway, Land O Lakes. Volunteers are being sought to assist with the program. The next training class will be Dec. 12. Meals and transportation expenses are reimbursed. Work continues on Old Dixie Highway

Road construction continues daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Old Dixie Highway from New York Avenue to SunWest Park. The section of the road from Gulf Way Avenue to the SunWest Park is open to local traffic only. The improvements include, but are not limited to: reconstruction of the base; drainage improvements; swales and cross pipes; resurfacing of the roadway; pavement markings, and restriping. The work is being done by Asphalt Paving Systems and is expected to be completed by Dec. 2. Goverment offices to close for Veterans Day

Pasco County government offices, including constitutional offices and the courts, will be closed Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. All offices and the courts will reopen Nov. 14. Also: • The Pasco County Tax Collector's Office will also be closed Nov. 12.

• County libraries will be closed Nov. 11, but will reopen Nov. 12 at their regularly scheduled times.

• While Pasco County recreation complexes and community centers will be closed to the public Nov. 11, parks and beaches will remain open to the public from dawn to dusk.

• The Pasco County Animal Services administration office, adoption center, intake/reclaim shelter and field services will be closed Nov. 11, with an Animal Control officer available only for emergencies. The adoption center and intake/reclaim shelter will resume regular business hours Nov. 12, and the administration office and field services will reopen Nov. 14.

• Pasco County Public Transportation will provide service on all fixed routes and paratransit service on Nov. 11. Fixed-route buses will run the holiday/Saturday schedule, Click on the link for routes online at bit.ly/2fisn8B). Administrative offices will be closed Nov. 11.

• The Pasco County Resource Recovery Facility, West Pasco Class III and the East Pasco Transfer Station will be closed Nov. 11 to the public; however, they will be open to licensed commercial haulers. All facilities will reopen to the public Nov. 12.

DADE CITY

Barrel race to benefit accident victim

The Running Strong for Kelly 4D Barrel Race will be Nov. 19 at Double R Arena, 32640 Amberlea Road. An exhibition will be from 9 to 11 a.m., with the show starting at 11:30 a.m. The exhibition is $5 per ticket. The entry fee is $5 for pee-wee barrels, $20 for the men's barrel race and $40 for the open 4D barrel race. There will be a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction, concessions and dog races. Funds raised will benefit Kelly Thomas, who suffered a spinal cord injury and broken neck in a motor vehicle accident. Through ongoing therapy, Kelly now walks with braces and a walker and also takes a full load of college courses. Pre-entries are being accepted through Nov. 17. Entries sought for Christmas parade

The Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce will host the 2016 Magical Night Christmas Parade on Dec. 2 through downtown Dade City. The parade will include dozens of floats, entertainment acts, bands, seasonal displays and Santa Claus. Boating safety course offered at discount

Hudson Flotilla 11-7 of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer its next About Boating Safely course at a reduced cost of $25 per person. The course will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 26 at the center, 9135 Denton Ave. Cost includes the class, a digital manual and processing. In observation of Veterans Day, members of American Legion Post 108 will offer poppies from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Publix store in the Shoppes at Sunlake Centre, 18901 State Road 54. Beginning Nov. 14, the Pasco County Utilities westside customer service center will be temporarily relocated. Walk-in customers will be able to use a temporary office/trailer in the existing parking lot at 7536 State St. (northeast corner of State Street and Government Drive). A temporary drive-through location will be at the Pasco County Building Inspections office, 7508 Little Road (enter on Government Drive, then make an immediate right turn). The Utilities office is currently undergoing renovations, with construction expected to be completed by midsummer. Youth Advisory Board holding food drive

The New Port Richey Parks and Recreation Youth Advisory Board is collecting canned and nonperishable food until Nov. 17. Sisters, parish to host Thanksgiving dinner

The Benedictine Sisters of Florida and St. Anthony parish are hosting their 21st annual Thanksgiving dinner from 2 to 3 p.m. Nov. 24 at the St. Anthony parish hall, 32848 Massachusetts Ave. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. The free homemade dinner will include turkey, stuffing, salad, mashed potatoes and a variety of desserts. Sister Donna prepares the meal, and the St. Anthony Women's Club provides the desserts. The rolls are provided by the Zephyrhills Golden Corral, decorations by St. Anthony students, and tableware provided by Geri Hall of Classic Party Settings. St. Joseph Church sets holiday bazaar

St. Joseph Catholic Church, 38710 5th Ave., will have a holiday bazaar from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 19 and 20. There will be a variety of items, including Christmas ornaments, hand-knit and crocheted baby items, wreaths, baskets, flower arrangements and table linens.
