STEPS BEYOND SHELTERS FOR HOMELESS COUNTY RESIDENTS: Join Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri as he discusses the issue of homeless shelters in Pinellas County. Topics include: Are shelters enough? Do they really help reduce homelessness or do they just get homeless people out of sight? This presentation will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon on April 16 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of St. Petersburg, Gilmour Hall, 100 Mirror Lake Drive N.

The event will be especially beneficial to homeless service providers, social workers, clergy, police officers, teachers, and others who work directly with this segment of our community. FAMILY HISTORY ASSISTANCE DAY: The Pinellas Genealogy Society and Largo Public Library are offering a free day of one-on-one genealogy research. Visit the library from noon to 4 p.m., on April 9 in the Local History Room and bring your family information and receive free, one-on-one research assistance from a PGS consultant. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Fair housing will be the feature topic on radio station WRXB 1590 AM from 10:05 to 10:35 a.m. on Thursday. The program is sponsored by the Housing Finance Authority of Pinellas County and airs the first Thursday of each month. Guests will include Paul Valenti, director, and Mark Esparza, housing manager with Pinellas County Office of Human Rights. Discussions will include creation of the Fair Housing Act, how Pinellas County investigates possible violations, and information on how to get help if issues arise. STETSON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LAW is accepting nominations for its Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals who have reached the top of their professions and have affected a profound, positive influence on the law school. PROM DRESS FOR GIRLS IN NEED: Belle of the Ball Project will provide prom dresses and accessories to in-need, low-income high school girls on four Saturdays this spring: April 9, April 23, and May 7, at its new location, 1210 Holt Ave., Clearwater. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dresses are available to all in-need, high school girls. No referral letter is necessary. No appointment needed. A $1 to $5 donation is requested but not necessary. Donations of dresses and accessories can also be made at the dates and times listed above. There are 46 other year-round donation sites. 2016 LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE REGISTRATION: Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce is taking registration for the 2016 Institute for Leadership Certificate Program, a series of workshops, meetings and tours, designed to develop leadership talent in individuals representing the community. An ideal candidate for this program should aspire to become an effective leader. Candidates may be newcomers, prospective leaders in the community, future managers in a company, or staff members that have a strong desire to excel and make necessary connections. Graduates are projected to be the future leaders of civic and business organizations for community action and improvement. Space is limited and deadline for registration is 5 p.m., on June 3. BURGER THROW DOWN: The Beer & Burger Throw Down is returning to Safety Harbor. The event will be from 2 to 8 p.m., April 16 and will offer several kinds of craft brews, tasting opportunities from local burger joints with samples for $3 or less, vendors and entertainment. The citywide burger and beer tasting starts at 2 p.m. and winners will be announced between 5 and 7 p.m. Cost is $5 and children and active military personnel are free. NORTH PINELLAS CULTURAL ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES "COMBINING FORCES TOO", a daylong conference created to consider initiatives for the promotion of cultural activities in North Pinellas County. The conference, to be held in the Heye Great Room at Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall, will be at 9 a.m. on Thursday. NPCA is funded by six municipalities including Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Tarpon Springs, Safety Harbor and Oldsmar along with private donations.

The object of the conference is to unify participating organizations to promote and improve the profile and image of North Pinellas. Attendees are encouraged to join the discussion on three initiatives: An Arts, Cultural and Historical Festival that will link all six municipalities via the Pinellas Trail; A public art partnership with Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority to feature designs on bus shelters created by local artists, depicting the spirit of each of the six municipalities; and opportunities to share resources to unify and promote cultural activities.

Morning session attendees will hear from cultural and civic leaders and learn about the three initiatives. After lunch there will be discussion from participants. Deadline to register is Tuesday. SUMMER CAMP: The Tarpon Springs Recreation Division will be holding a summer camp from June 13 through Aug. 5. Kids can enjoy activities, crafts and trips. Registration is open, and camp hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Aftercare is available from 5:30 to 6 p.m. for an additional fee of $10 per week. The cost for eight weeks is $475 or $75 per week for cardholders and $550; or $85 per week for non-cardholders.
