New scholarship: Scholarships will be awarded to youth from the University Area Community starting in May 2013 with the creation of the Victor D. Crist Community Opportunity Scholarship. The scholarship, developed by the University Area Community Development Corp. and the University of South Florida Area Community Civic Association, was announced last week at the UACDC annual awards banquet. Donations from the banquet will be put toward the scholarship. About $21,000 was donated, with the USF Area Community Civic Association matching the first $10,000.
Dan Jurman, UACDC executive director and CEO, will develop a committee to work with the University of South Florida and Hillsborough Community College to establish scholarship criteria.
The scholarship is named in honor of Victor D. Crist, who has volunteered in the University Area Community for 32 years.
Burger King scholarships: Ten Hillsborough County high school students each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Burger King Scholars Program.
The scholarship winners are: Kayla Mention, Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate; Jessica Kozlovsky, Gaither High; Alina Puente, Sickles High; Cory Goldman, Wharton High; Derrell Smith, Gaither High; Jordan Reasor, Gaither High; Kimberly Ortiz, Gaither High; Loraine Napoles, Leto High; Mariem Del Rio, Tampa Bay Tech; and Dianjah Claypool, Durant High.
The scholarships are awarded based on GPA, extracurricular activities, community service and work experience.
Academic award: Wyatt Roop, a Jesuit High School junior wrestler, has been named a 2012 Academic All-American by the National High School Coaches Association. Roop is a Jesuit honor roll student with a 3.6 GPA and a 107-32 record during his junior wrestling season.
This is Roop's second honor from the NHSCA.
School fair: The Tampa Bay Parenting Back to School Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Glazer Children's Museum in downtown Tampa. The fair will feature information on topics including health and wellness, safety, private schools, local resources, childcare, after-school programs, school supplies, tutors and children's retailers.
There also will be live entertainment, speaker sessions, games, and arts and crafts. Fair guests can visit the rest of the museum for $5. Call (813) 949-4400.
Summer camps: Friends of Tampa Recreation Inc. has awarded 178 scholarships for children to attend Tampa parks and recreation 2012 summer camp programs. The scholarship is given to children ages 5 to 14 who receive free or reduced lunch and are city residents. The non-profit organization raises money to support Tampa parks and recreation programs and activities.
The Pete Burgue Summer Scholarship Program has funded 470 camp scholarships since 2009.
Food expo: The Hillsborough County Public Schools Student Nutrition Services Department will host their third annual Fresh Flavors — Foods for Body and Mind Expo from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, in the Spoto High School dining room, 8538 Eagle Palm Drive, Riverview.
Students will taste and rate menu options for the 2012-13 school year. Twenty-seven new items will be tested, including sweet potato salad, spinach lasagna and grilled chicken dijon wraps. The students will rate the dishes on a scale of Love It, Like It or Dislike It based on taste, smell and appearance.
